My pt cruiser is an ‘08, I bought it in 2010. I’ve owned it for nearly eight years so far. It was also my very first car that I bought. Not sure about the rest of oppo, but I feel like that is a long time; especially in today’s society where people always want something better.

We literally have no reason to sell it; it’s paid off, it runs and drives, it’s easy to put the kids in their car seats in it, it’s a good grocery car too, the list can go on. Sure, it’s not the fastest car, nor does it get amazing gas mileage, but it performs its duties faithfully and is the only car without a check engine light on! It’s also the slowest car we own, lol.

So Oppo, what is the longest you have ever owned a car? And how long did you own your first car? I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one who has kept a car for this long, nor still has their first car.

I get bored easily and have never owned a car longer than a year or two. I kept my first car, a 635csi, for around a year. That I did not get bored of though, and will always regret selling. It was just SO rusty... and a total death trap. 1989 airbag for me, nothing for the passenger.

the longest I ever owned a car was 7 years - 1 month.

It was a 2003 protege5 that i bought new, till 2010 when i bought my 2010 AWD sx4 6 speed. that I had for 5 years - 1 month, when i Crashed it.

the only reason I owned the Protege5 so long, was that I owed more than what it was worth till the very end.

I owned my PT for about as long and then it spit out a spark plug and ruined the head. I have a hard time keeping a DD that long as I’m wracking up a lot of miles. I put 40k on my Forester last year.

Just hit 23 years - I wasn’t long out of high school when I bought this:

(most recent pic taken 4 weeks ago, haven’t driven it since as it rains every weekend).

Had the first car under a year as it was in a bit of a scrape before I was 17, and was too much of a job to fix. I had my W210 E55 AMG for 7 years, that’s the runner up.

I kept my first for 8 before giving it to my parents that drove it for 7 more before someone hit and totaled it.

I kept my second for 8 before replacing it with my current main car.

The current one I planned to keep for the average period but at the rate I’m driving it, this will be my last car provided it doesn’t get totaled at some point.

I’ve technically owned my Saab, my first car, for uhhh... 17 years... maybe? But there was a 12-13 year gap there were it sat in a field.

After that the longest I’ve had a car is my Volvo, which I have had since December of 2012.

PT Cruisers are such decent, honest cars (or truck, technically...) that get a lot of crap for no reason

Kinja'd!!!

I’ll have had my Lancia for 11 years in May and intend on keeping it forever.

Kinja'd!!!

I’ve had the Fiero for 6 years now as a daily driver. I kinda want to get a new car just so I don’t run it into the ground, mileage wise.

Kinja'd!!!

The s-10 was my first vehicle back in high-school, so 13-14 years maybe, and it’s still hanging around. It’s just kinda on standby to do the occasional truck stuff, or when nostalgia gets to me.

I’ve owned 3 different cars for about 5 years each, but those are the rare ones. Usually I get 2ish years out of each vehicle before I get too itchy to try something different.

I’m really hoping that the Nissan Titan I just got will stick around for a while though, It’s far more of a tool than just a “just useful enough” fun car.

(Cars are about the only thing I’m that eager to replace though, I’ve had my current phone for 3.5 years and I’m still happy with it).

Vary similar to my wife’s 01 Caviler, and probably how her Fit will turn out. The only reason she was okay with buying the Fit was that the rust in the Caviler was to the point of being unsafe, as well as ugly. Like one day a 2”x3’ strip of the rockerpanel just fell off. She owned that horrible car for SIX years. Now with their Fit we’ve had it 3 put on 30,000 miles or so and she has ever intention of driving it until it dies. Which makes sense because A, it certainly gets the job done, and B, the only repair it’s needed in our ownership has been a 350 dollar blower motor. The car has 74,000 miles on it now and unless we accidentally have two more kids I would imagine she’ll put another 100,000 on it at least.

For me about a year isn’t my average ownership time. I’ve had 10 cars and Ben driv8ng 10 years. My 91 Civic and 91 Galant vr-4 are the exceptions I had both of those over 2 years, the later I still technically own. I’m hoping the 328xi sticks around awhile although I plan on it not being my only car as I’d like to get something smaller lighter and RWD.

I worry about what might happen if a drunk driver surprised me in a car like that. No crash safety standards, just a seatbelt for my passenger. I would never forgive myself if something happened to a close friend or GF because I insisted on having something old as my only car. I’m not trying to talk trash and that sounds like a fun lifestyle! But for me, the classics will be sunny weather only from now on.

Bought my Charger in 2005 in high school, so 13 years. As for DDs, I’ve had my truck and my wife’s car since college, going on 8 years each. The truck I got from my dad also, so it’s been around longer, but has only been mine for 7 or 8 years. My newest to me has been around 6 years, but with two kids now, vacations are tough, so it’s time to upgrade.

I’ve still got my first car, it just doesn’t get driven on the street any more. It has been around for a long time. My aunt bought it new in 1988, my dad bought it from her in 1996 and used it as his autocross car and daily driver until it became my first car to drive as my own in 2001 ( I actually got the title as a high school graduation gift in 2003). I put the cage in it and started developing it as an IT car in 2003, and I don’t think it was registered for street use after 2004. It isn’t going anywhere unless or until I someday pull the trigger on something with open wheels and wings to play with on the racetrack. I actually remember riding in this car as a five year old.

My first car was a 2001 Kia Rio. I owned it for 1 year and 10,000 miles. I sold it in 2012 to get my first smart, a 2012 passion coupe:

I got it new with 10 miles on the odometer. It now has 145,000 miles. It’s been a fun 6 year relationship. :3

Kinja'd!!!

My next smart is the 2016 that I got in...2016. Also a new car. It had 20 miles on it when it left the dealer, it now has 4,800 miles.

Kinja'd!!!

The third is a 2005 that I got last year (2017). It had 24,000 miles on it when I picked it up, it now has 25,000 and change.

Kinja'd!!!

And the fourth is the one I got last month! Also a 2005.

I still own my first car and it does daily driver duty. It’s a 1994 Saturn SC2 that I purchased in 2004. Actually, I believe I purchased it in April 2004 so we are on year 14 now. It has been a remarkably reliable car, but everything other than the engine is really starting to show its age. So, I plan on replacing it around the beginning of next year. I will miss it a lot.

I don’t have many pictures of it on my phone. Here it is doing some work last spring.

The traffic is pretty civilized here (in Finland) and I’m very sensible driver so I’m quite fine with the old stuff. I have had exactly one accident when I was driving (and one very minor fender bender while traveling in my roommate’s car). Couple of years ago I got bumped off the highway by a sleepy/distracted van driver.

My neck was a bit stiff for one week but otherwise I survived intact. Polo did not but it was already in the last leg of its life.

The grass is always greener! I don’t think I will ever bond with a daily like some people can. Eventually I get fed up. Until I am established enough to *really* buy a forever car (635...) and have a garage to keep it in, the cycle will continue. Life is short and there are a TON of cars on my bucket list. Cars are kinda similar to video games in that respect for me; I don’t have to beat it, I just play until I’m satisfied with the experience, then move on.

My friends all call me crazy because my dad and I just don’t sell cars very often.

His list:
- 77 Jeep CJ-7 - 7 years
- 80 Camaro Z28 - 38 years (Original owner)
- 97 F150 - 12 years
- Rail buggy with a ‘65 Beetle engine - not sure, at least 35 years.
- Somewhere in the past, he used to own a ‘70 Chevelle SS and a ‘63 VW Beetle. Apparently he got fed up with the Chevelle having issues and traded it and the Beetle on the Camaro.

My list:
- 94 Chevy C1500 - 12 years
- 01 F150 - 2 years (grandfather owned since new, inherited from him)
- 67 Pontiac GTO - 4 years

I’ve not actually sold anything yet, and really don’t plan to. Looking at going and buying a ‘79 Chevy K10 this weekend.
